What is JPG?

When applied to image compression, the DCT coefficients can describe the differences between an image and a reference image.
The Joint Photographic Experts Group, or JPEG, was created in 1986 in response to the United Nations’ International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) request for a still image compression standard. The ITU is now known as the International Telecommunication Union. JPEG was developed as a standardized format to allow for the compression and storage of digital images.
JPEG’s lossy compression technique was based on the work of two German scientists, Hans J. Koch and Peter E. W. Fieguth, who published a paper in 1985 entitled Transformation-Based Pyramidal Coding of Images.
JPEG images are popular for web graphics because they can be compressed to tiny file sizes while retaining decent image quality.
