What is Ahi Tuna?

Ahi Tuna is one of the species of Tunas. Tuna is referred to as aquatic life (i.e., Fish) that are mostly caught for their meat. They are mostly used as food for humans. Ahi Tuna is one such Tuna. Ahi Tuna can be seen in tropical and subtropical waters. There is no specific season to catch them easily. But, they are mostly caught in the summer season.

Ahi Tuna have pinkish flesh. Their meat is slightly pink. Ahi Tuna are also smaller in size. On average Ahi Tuna which are fully matured are 2 to 2.5m in length. An average, fully-matured ahi Tuna has an average weight of 200-220 lbs.

What is Yellowfin Tuna?

Yellowfin Tuna is one of the subspecies of Ahi Tuna. Generally, Ahi tuna are subcategorized into two species;- Bigeye Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna. Yellowfin Tuna has most of the parts of Tunas like Anal yellow in color. This is the exact reason behind this species of Ahi Tuna being named Yellowfin Tuna.

Yellowfin Tuna has deep red color meat. Its meat is considered to be of one of the best quality. The quality of yellowfin depends upon many other factors like the way of handling and fishing. The meat of yellowfin is not considered good enough to be eaten raw. Unlike, other species of Ahi Tunas, yellowfins are not cooked into sashimi.

Yellowfin are the largest species of Ahi Tuna, both in weight and size. Yellowfin Tunas have a length between one hundred and ten to one hundred and twenty centimeters. The average weight of yellowfin Tuna is expected to be between two hundred to three hundred lbs.

The greater size, better meat, longer length all these reasons contribute to yellowfin Tunas being a bit more expensive than Ahi Tunas. The cost of yellowfin Tunas in US dollars is approximately thirty-two dollars that costs around two thousand in INR.

Difference Between Ahi Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna

  1. The meat of Ahi Tuna is pinkish. On the other hand, yellowfin has deep red color meat.
  2. The cost of Ahi Tuna is less than Yellowfin Tuna. Although yellowfin has more cost, it also has a bigger size.
  3. Ahi Tuna has is less weight and length. Contrary to this yellowfin is bigger.
  4. Ahi Tuna can be used to prepare raw dishes like sashimi. Yellowfin is not good for this purpose.
